Complications

Well, the doctors told us that there would be good days and bad days. For a little while it seemed like we were going to escape all the bad days, but they are starting to hit now. After being off of the ventilators for a while, both Sarah and Emily had to go back on them. They say that it is not uncommon for babies their size to do that.

Sarah
Sarah now has an infection. They are treating her with antibiotics. However, the type of infection she has can lead to menigitus. They drew fluid from her spine and it looked good to the naked eye, but they won't know for sure until the tests come back (about 48 hours). If they do find infection in the spinal fluid, then they will bump up the antibiotics, but we are praying that it hasn't made it to the spinal fluid and that antibiotics take care of the problem. On the plus side, Sarah has made it to the 2 pound mark!

Emily
Emily also has an infection and is getting antibiotics. However, she has several other concerns that need your prayers. She has pnemonia, though it is clearing up. She has had some bleeding in the brain. At this point, there is nothing that can be done except to keep a close eye on it and make sure that the fluid keeps draining out and doesn't build up pressure on the brain. Also, they are looking at the kidneys for possible problems since she is apparently not getting rid of all the stuff that she needs to. There is not necessarily a problem there, they are just checking as it is a possibilty. And lastly, she started swelling a bit and had gained a little to much weight in the last 24 hours. The doctor ordered some medicine to reduce the swelling and hopefully that will take care of that problem. On the plus side, Emily has made it to 2 pounds and has actually been there for a few days.
As for Julie, she is having her ups and downs too. She came home from the C-section but ended up having an infection in her incision. She went on antibiotics and it started to clear it up, but then started getting worse again. She ended up back in the hospital for a couple of days to be treated with IV antibiotics. She is back home again now and hopefully her infection will be totally gone in the next few days and her incision will heal quickly.

Thanks again for your prayers and support. Please continue to pray as these girls still have a long hard road ahead of them.
